This is the seventh congress in our series "Wiener Schockgespräche – Vienna Shock Forum. The first initiative for this congress in 1986 was one of the many far sighted ideas of our mentor Günther Schlag, to whom this meeting is dedicated. He definitely was one of the major pioneers in the field of shock research. Along with his ideas, in this meeting we will try to continue the fruitful dialog between clinicians of different specialities and basic reseach with various backgrounds.

This congress was organized by the Society for the Advancement of Research in Traumatic and Septic Shock in cooperation with the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Experimental and Clinical Traumatology and the Austrian Worker´s Compensation Board.

I want to thank all the members of the institute, especially our administrators, who managed the organization of this congress without support from a commercial congress organizer. In addition, I also want to thank our sponsors, whose support is greatly appreciated.

We hope that this meeting with more than 200 presentations, both lectures and posters, will offer numerous possibilities for motivation and stimulation, especially for our young colleagues. Despite many recent frustrations in large clinical trials, they should carry on with research in trauma, shock, sepsis and multiorgan failure in the future, in order to help provide optimum medical care for our patients,
