TWENTY-FIFTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON SHOCK Big Sky
Resort Big
Sky, Montana June
8-11, 2002 NOTES FROM PROGRAM CHAIR 2002: |
If you are not already planning to attend, I want to take this opportunity to invite you to join us for our 25th Annual Conference on Shock to be held in Big Sky, Montana. While I realize it is too late to submit an abstract for the program, I strongly encourage you to attend. The annual meeting not only represents an excellent opportunity to update yourself on the ongoing changes in the field of shock research, but also is always a wonderful chance to renew old acquaintances as well as make new ones. Your participation is also important as the vitality of the meeting depends not only on the quality of the work submitted, but also on the insight provided by scientists in attendance. That said, with the help of the Shock Society Council, the Program, Awards/Honor, and the Development Committees, as well as Shock Meeting Management’s efforts I believe we are bringing together a scientifically exciting meeting in a beautiful venue in southern Montana. This year three symposia are planned on: (1) Critical Receptor/Ligand Interactions in the Pathogenesis of Shock; (2) Novel Approaches to Current Problems in Critically Ill Patients; (3) Pathogenesis, Manifestations and Current Therapies of Thermal Injury Induced Lung Dysfunction, as well as two workshops on: (1) Current Status of Federal Funding in Shock/Trauma Research and (2) Controversies in Shock Outcome. Two Plenary Sessions are planned on: (1) Insights Into the Mechanisms of Burn, Sepsis and Shock Induced Organ Injury and (2) Cutting Edge in Shock Research – Activated Protein C and Sepsis. As in the past, one of the highlights of the meeting is again the Young Investigators Competition. This year we are fortunate to have five competitors who are to be commended for making it to the finals (see Program). The keynote address by President-elect Carol Wells, Ph.D. will be on “Double Bubble Toil and Trouble The Caldron of Research, Academia, and the Private Sector.” This year’s after-dinner speaker will be Kevin Schneider who will speak on the topic of “Yellowstone National Park: Issues and Challenges.” In keeping with last year’s meeting we have also crafted four mini-symposia around distinct topics derived from the large number of high quality abstracts submitted to the Program Committee. Session topics, speakers and talk titles are posted below (see Program).
With Dr. Dan Remick’s assistance we are also continuing the new forum specifically for young investigators. (Young Investigators Research Forum)
Dr. Scott Somers, Program Director, Division Pharmacy, Physiology and Biologic Medicine in NIGMS will be at the meeting. Any of you (especially the investigators early in your academic career) with questions concerning funding through the National Institute of Health are encouraged to meet with him.
Enjoyment remains a part of your annual meetings. To this end Dr. Mark Clemens is organizing the 20th Annual Shock Society Fun Run. So, if the urge hits you, I encourage you to sign-up now. Forms can be downloaded from the Shock Society website or obtained through contacting Shock Meeting Management. Similar to last year’s meeting we also are giving attendees the afternoon off (Monday, June 10) so you can enjoy either the facilities at this lovely resort or go out on excursion to the local Montana environment. However, to truly enjoy any meeting some planning is essential. Thus remember to get your registration in early, book your hotel room before May 19th if possible, and make your reservation for air and ground transportation. Forms for all these, except air travel, can be either downloaded from the Shock Society website or obtained by contacting Shock Society Meeting Management at telephone: 251-625-2205/fax: 251-625-4429. We believe we have a scientifically exciting program at a wonderful venue for you this year, so what we need now is your participation to make it a vital meeting.
H. Hank Simms, M.D.
