Postdoctoral Training in Trauma and Burn Research

  The Burn & Shock Trauma Institute of Loyola University invites applications for NIH supported post-doctoral training in research related to trauma and burn science. This program is open to both 1) clinical residents in general surgery or other applicable specialties and 2) individuals who hold a recent Ph.D. degree in a biomedical discipline and wish to study basic problems relevant to the clinical problems of burn and trauma. The training period begins on or after July 1, 2007 and includes two years of intensive basic laboratory research training. Application requirements: Fellowships are restircted to US citizens or permanent residents; clinicians should have completed at least two years of clinical training prior to entrance. For Ph.D. applicants, recent graduates are preferred. Applications from under-represented minorities are strongly encouraged.   Position Summary: Position available immediately to monitor, execute, and design studies related to the involvement of adenosine receptors and the hypoxia inducible factor in mouse sepsis and burn models. The applicant must have experience in managing mouse colonies. Applicant must have a PhD and/or MD with experience with rodent models of trauma. Background in physics or chemistry is desirable. Experience conducting flow cytometry and PCR is highly desirable. Must be able to work independently, generate experimental hypotheses, and design appropriate experiments to test hypotheses.   A postdoctoral position is available to study the cellular and molecular mechanisms of hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury. Projects include signaling mechanisms employed by parenchymal and non-parenchymal liver cells during inflammation, proteomic analysis of signaling pathways and cellular responses, and the interactions of leukocyte populations (macrophages, lymphocytes and neutrophils) during post-ischemic liver injury. Applicants must have an M.D. and/or Ph.D. with a strong background in cellular and molecular biology. Experience with small animal surgery/experimentation is preferred.   The Department of Pathology of the University of Michigan has an opening for a post-Doctoral Fellow. The candidate will study the immunopathology of sepsis. Using an animal model of sepsis, the laboratory is attempting to understand the changes which result in organ injury and death. Studies span the gamut of molecular mechanisms of cellular dysfunction to whole animal experiments investigating physiologic responses to sepsis. The laboratory has been continuously funded by NIH for over 10 years. The applicant should have experience in handling of experimental animals, as well as basic understanding of immunological assays for measuring cytokines.
